Bupa Junior Great Sunderland Run

Hundreds of youngsters took part in the 2.5km Bupa Junior Great Sunderland Run on Sunday 18 July 2010.

The event started and finished at Sunderland AFC’s Stadium of Light and runners were set on their way by the winners of the Bupa Great North 10k – Sunderland, Edwin Kipkorir and Sue Partridge, which took place earlier that morning.

Also present on the day to cheer on the thousands taking part was Chris Chittell and Eden Taylor Draper, aka Eric Pollard and Belle Dingle from Emmerdale who were representing Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, the official charity for the Bupa Junior Great Sunderland Run.

Eden, who completed the Bupa Junior Great Sunderland Run for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research or the forenamed “Banana Army” because of the bright yellow t shirts the runners wear, said: “I’m running all the Bupa Junior Great Run’s this year for the Banana Army, I really enjoyed taking part and it was great to finish at the Stadium of Light.”

There was a separate boys and girls race which was split into two age categories 9 – 11 and 12 – 14 years.

Winner of the boys 9 – 11 contest was James Wood of Darlington Harriers in a time of 10 minutes and 04 seconds. In first place in the boys 12 – 14 years age category in a time of 8 minutes and 44 seconds was Luke Clark of South Shields Harriers & AC.

First across the finishing line in the girls 9 – 11 age category was Nawal Elkirate in a time of 11 minutes. Winner of the girls 12 – 14 year contest was Sarah Wilkes in a time of 10 minutes and 16 seconds.
