HELEN SKELTON joined the Blue Peter team in the summer of 2008, as the 33rd presenter of the long running show. During this time Helen has achieved some remarkable feats and made a name for herself as the team’s all action girl. Her accomplishments include climbing out of a moulin on an Alaskan glacier, beating a world power boat champion and coming in 6th place in the UK Women’s Downhill Skateboarding Championships. She recently became only the second woman to complete the Nambia Ultra Marathon – a grueling 78 mile course through the Namibian desert, which she finished in under 24 hours. Two weeks later she was back in her running shoes, taking part in the London Marathon. Having grown up on a farm in the Lake District, Helen spends a lot of time enjoying the great outdoors and indulging her sporting passions. Helen is taking part in the Great North Run on September 20th to raise awareness for Leonard Cheshire Disability, which supports thousands of disabled people in the UK and across the world to live life their way.
What is your least favourite training session?
I did a run in the hail and snow earlier this year; my trousers were soaking so they were really heavy and dragging on the ground. It was so cold my face was stinging.
Who is your athletic hero/heroine?
I have a few, Ellen Mcarther because she is so brave. Jonathan Edwards because he wasn't afraid to re learn some of his skills. Stuart Robinson, a veteran triathlete, because he is totally committed to his sport even though he has to do a full time job and look after his family.
What was your first race?
I did the Great North Run about three years ago, it wasn't a race, I just wanted to get through it!
What is your favourite race venue?
I haven't done many races but from the ones I have done I have to say the Great North Run has the best atmosphere.
What sport event would you most like to go to?
I really want to go to the World Cup in South Africa. When the World Cup is on, even people who don't like football get into it.
If you weren’t a television presenter, what career path do you think you would have taken?
I talk a lot so I probably would have been a teacher, I wanted to be a pilot when I was younger but I am cross eyed!
What is your greatest running achievement?
I ran 78 miles in the Namibian dessert within 24 hours. It was a team effort though.
What interests do you have?
I love walking my dog, going to watch football and seeing my friends. I used to enjoy cycling but my dog is not very cycle aware - he gets too close to the bike wheels!
In the hours leading up to a race, how do you prepare?
I eat lots and lots of sweets - which my dentist is not happy about! I talk to lots of people and try to convince myself it will be a laugh from start to finish - there is no point getting stressed or worrying it won't make the distance any shorter!
