Have you been running for a long time or have you recently taken it up?
I’ve been a ‘wannabee’ runner for a while now! I’ve done a number of 10K runs over the past few years but really only go into real ‘training’ mode a couple of months before the actual event. It’s always my intention to keep the running regime up after the event, but to be honest, that rarely happens.
What inspired you to get running?
I’m doing the Great North 10K as part of a number of challenges this year for the charity Zoe’s Place. We’ve called it Lisa’s Ten in 10 and includes a number of events including this one, the Great North Swim, an abseil off the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough and a night in a Haunted House. www.justgiving/lisastenin10
What is the best piece of training advice you’ve been given?
Don’t look at your watch!
Do you train alone, with a running partner or as part of a group?
I train alone at the minute but as we get closer to the event I’m going to try and get a few of the guys from work to join me on some runs. I’m reckon my breakfast co-host Gary Philipson could offer me some good advice given his running expertees.
What was your first race and how did it go?
My first race was the very first Great Women’s Run and I really enjoyed it. It was the longest distance I’d ever ran at that point and I just felt elated that I’d finished, despite a pretty poor time.
What is your greatest running achievement?
Getting my quickest time yet at last year’s Great North 10K. I’m not going to tell you what it was as it’s still not really that fast, but I always aim to shave a minute off my time and managed to do it last year.
Describe the atmosphere at a big mass participation event?
I love the atmosphere before the actual event as it’s a mixture of excitement, nervousness and anticipation. I think the fact there is always a real mix of running abilities adds to the fun atmosphere, specially when there are group of people dressed up to help raise more money for their cause. When you’re on the course and you’re starting to flag a bit it’s the best feeling in the world when a person in the crowd gives you a shout of encouragement. It really lifts you, and then when you finish the high of actually completing the course is brilliant.
If you weren’t an actor/actress/TV presenter etc, what career path do you think you would have taken?
I think I’m really lucky that I have managed to become a radio presenter as I have no idea what I would have done. I really enjoy photography, so perhaps that might have been an alternative.
What other interests do you have?
As I just mentioned, I love going out and taking pictures. As I’m in training for the Great North Swim, I’ve started swimming a lot more so I guess I could call that an interest. I’ve also recently started to do the odd scenic walk. I also love going on holiday and exploring new places if I get the chance.
What advice could you offer new runners preparing for their first event?
First and foremost, just have fun on the day. Don’t put to much pressure on yourself. Do put in the training so you at least feel comfortable, and don’t think a couple of cheeky drinks the night before will be okay!
